Sal Tonge - Our Interviewer
Sal Tonge is a verbal artist- a popular performer in festivals, concerts and village halls. She works widely and often almost invisibly with people in hospitals, special needs settings and schools.

Jo Jukes
As an artist, writer, singer and creativity workshop tutor, the recurring themes of my work are the natural world and our relationship to it. The landscape of Shropshire with its mix of ancient settlements and birth of industry inspires me to explore the changes, the feel and the atmosphere of a place. My jewellery designs and textural artwork are organic, leaving a rawness about the metal which reminds me of archaeological finds or by-products of industry.
I work in a wide variety of media and am constantly developing new creative practices in my life’s growth. I am currently working on a series of paintings and collographs of the Shropshire hill forts inspired by experiences encountered in the writing my first book ‘Finding Home -Journeys with the Hillforts of Shropshire’.
My second book ‘Finding Beauty - A year of Nature Outside Your Door’ will be out later this year. During the past two years I have also been writing a collection of songs that will be released as an album in spring called ‘Weaving the World’ with my multi-instrumentalist, musician friend Rick Wilson.

Katherine Soutar Caddick
There is a Seamus Heaney poem called digging, which is his testament to the skill of his father and grandfather as farmers and how much their work was bound up with their way of being in the world and it ends with these lines
‘Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests.
I’ll dig with it’
This has always been my feeling about making art too. It is my way of being in the world, I dig in paper for what I can find there and bring into the light and what I find there is influenced by everything I have seen and heard and experienced.
As an illustrator my work has always focused on the evocation and enhancement of narrative. It brings together my deep love of story and folklore with my interest in the natural world and our relationship to it. Even as a small child, stories, songs and poems were as much a visual experience for me as they were an experience of reading and listening. There is a magic in storytelling I try to capture in my artwork.

My Sri Lankan roots have infused in me a lifelong love of bold and uplifting colours. I draw on childhood memories; of times spent in my mothers’ garden filled with exotic plants and vegetables. These experiences continue to form my adult life.
My garden and allotment are a constant source of inspiration for my paintings. Sri Lanka is a country that is rich in culture and history. Living and growing up alongside different religions has given me a respect for all cultures, and a strong spiritual outlook on life.
I use symbols to convey a message of hope and optimism in my art.
The main focus of my various art forms, is my fascination with the natural world. Nature is a constant source of inspiration to me, and it is the way I restore and heal. My art is a response to the landscape I inhabit. My work explores the mediums of watercolour, acrylic & oil painting as well as felted textile

JAQUELINE COOLEY
Jaqueline Cooley is an artist who describes herself as having her ‘fingers in many pies’! She has had a very varied career, often having interesting part time freelance roles running alongside her creative practice.
She studied Three Dimensional Design: Glass at University followed by 6 years working for a ceramics company, then 6 years as a technician in the glass department at the University of Wolverhampton. Self employment beckoned as she began working on a series of large scale public art projects. Ideas and imagery for these projects would often spill over into her studio work, such as Millstone and Leaf series. The experience she gained led to a number of fixed contract roles such as arts development officer for local councils, project coordinator of a regional touring exhibition and Business Manager at Designs in Mind.
Since 2010 she has worked for the International Festival of Glass as International Coordinator and from 2015 has worked with renowned disabled artist Tanya Raabe-Webber as her PA/Artists Assistant/Project Producer.
From 2017-2018 Jaqueline studied for an MA in Design and Applied Art: Glass. Her final project was inspired by the National Trust village of Quatt where she lived. Using the visual clues of former residents and the lives they once lived she created a body of work that represented a palette of images, textures and mark making, gathered together in a collection of vessels. Accompanied by video, photography and audio, the collection drew the viewer into the immersive world of Quatt.
Jaqueline is currently a member of the Boundary Way INKollective, a collective of artists working with homemade botanical inks who set regular postcard challenges reflecting concerns for the environment or interest in local folklore.

ELLA BARON
An editorial cartoonist and comics artist, I create visual narratives with drawings that are dark, spiky and detailed. They tend towards social commentary and satire.
I grew up with a stylus in hand: a born digital artist, I have a First in English Literature from Oxford, somewhat to my surprise given my thesis focused entirely on the space between a comics’ panels. Fulfilling all the cliches, I live in a warehouse in East London.
My debut graphic novel INTERFACE will be published by Virago. I've taken commissions from publications, NGOs, businesses and individuals

Fi Marks
Fi paint stories of women from history and literature. Fi says "Women have been and continue to be silenced, I give them a voice! I not only research these women, but the textiles of the time. These patterns surround the women, in their setting and clothes. Every detail is painted by hand and a wonder to behold"
Fi's journey has had many twists and turns (like the tales she tells through paint). As a child she always wanted to be an actress, however much of her time was spent with books and pencils, history and fashion being a huge passion.
Fi went on to study drama and acted for a while before becoming a teacher in London. Her time in education was consumed with promoting creativity and the arts at the centre of the school curriculum. Directing productions, teaching art and dance was where her passion lay.
Fi is now a full time artist with her art selling all over the world. You can find out more via the links below
